The second annual ANSIN & MONTEITH SUPERSTOCK BIG BANG Best pairs was run and won. It was clear as early as heat 1 who the form pairing was.

58p Peter Bengston was lightning quick to storm to the front from 19c Malcolm Ngatai who seemed to struggle in the early laps. Bengstons partner 31p Andy McCabe was fighting his way through to the sharp end and then the first piece of drama unfolded when 7p Shane Penn had to park up with a mechanical problem. Penn and 4p chad Ace were on paper one of the favourites and this was a major setback so early in the night. At flagfall Bengston showed he was the quickest on track for the win from the resurgent Malcolm Ngatai and McCabe firmly in third. { at 4pm Ngatai called to say the Ferry had been delayed and he was just at the Rimutaka hills, he somehow still managed to arrive just in time and we thank him for his efforts to do so }.

Heat 2 saw Penn back to his best. 71p Shane Mellsop was driving a blinder to chase down and then pass Penn who immediately retaliated to push past the 71p and reclaim a lead he would hold till the finish. Andy McCabe was again on top form as he pushed his way up the placings eventually moving Mellsop over to take second with Ngatai fourth and Bengston right there handily placed in fifth. After 2 heats it was really only about two pairings. Ngatai/Mellsop on 69pts and McCabe/Bengston 73pts. It was a mammoth 31pts back to third but with double points up for grabs in the last race it was still all on. Andy McCabe is like a fine wine that just gets better and better with time and I beleive he could be in line for the season of his career. Andy broke free of the pack in heat 3 to storm off for the win with teamster Bengston tucked in second. Mellsop was on his bumper but just couldn’t seem to find a way by and try as he might he eventually got tagged by Penn which dropped the 71p back to 6th. With Ngatai having been spun early in the race their challenge had lost all hope. At the flag  fall McCabe and Bengston went 1,2 with Penn third. Interestingly near the end of this heat 98b Quintin Butcher ended up on his lid but it wouldn’t be the last we would hear from him.

Once the points were tallied McCabe & Bengston were very worthy 2011 Big Bang champions from Ngatai & Mellsop with a surprised Butcher & Miers stealing third.
It was a great event and we thank ANSIN & MONTEITH for their support and look forward to 2012.
